The programming and content at the children’s department at Oakland Public Library is carefully curated in hopes of educating, entertaining and inspiring young minds. We have a wide selection of picture books, chapter books, e-books, etc.

We pride ourselves on having a safe and welcoming environment for kids and their families. Aside from our vast collection of reading material, we also have various events and programs nearly every single day! June Special Events at the Oakland Public Library (Children’s Dept.)

June Craft Bags (to go) will be available for pick-up beginning Wednesday, June 7th.  Oakland children of all ages may come into the Children’s Dept. OR call ahead for curbside pick-up for this June craft.  One craft bag per child, please.  Registration is not required.

The 2023 “ALL TOGETHER NOW” Summer Reading Club kicks off Tuesday, June 27th at 1:00 pm.  The Good Humor Ice Cream Truck will be outside the Library with FREE ice cream for Oakland children!  Registration is required, and begins Wednesday, June 14th.  Each registered participant will be issued an ice cream voucher.  Supplies are limited.  Reading Club materials will also be available for pick-up.  Small prizes will be awarded all summer long for eager readers!  Thanks to the New Friends of the Oakland Public Library, this is just the beginning of many great things to come this summer!  All programs are free of charge!

Miss Christina will present her wonderful “Jiggly Wiggly” music program on Friday, June 30th at 11:00 am.  Oakland children, ages 2 & up, and their caregivers, will enjoy music and movement activities.  The program will be held outside, under the Library’s tent. (“Jiggly Wiggly” will move inside in the event of inclement weather.)  Registration is required, and begins Wednesday, June 14th.  Each child, including siblings, must be registered.

****SAVE THE DATES FOR THESE JULY PROGRAMS:

THURSDAY, JULY 6th at 3:45 pm:  BALLOONITY!!!  Enjoy stories about kindness, using balloon sculptures created by Mark Ghia. Oakland children, ages 4 & up, will also meet Sammy the Snake, a 7-foot long puppet made entirely out of balloons!  Mark will climb into a 6-foot balloon!  There will also be a Great Balloon Race, and an opportunity for each participant to twist a balloon in Balloon School to take home!  Registration is required for BALLOONITY, and begins Wednesday, June 21st.  The program will be held on the Library’s stage.

FRIDAY, JULY 7th at 11:00 am:  MOVE & GROOVE!!!  Oakland children, ages 2 & up, and their caregivers, are invited to join Ms. Jolie for her fabulous music and dance program.  The program will be held outside, under the Library’s tent. (“Move & Groove” will move inside in the event of inclement weather.)  Registration is required, and begins Wednesday, June 21st.  Each child, including siblings, must be registered.

THURSDAY, JULY 13th at 3:45 pm: JESTER JIM!!!  This is not your ordinary Juggling Show!  Spinning iPads, beat boxing, amazing tricks, and a trunk full of props will all be incorporated into an amazing performance.  Jester Jim performs some 300 shows a year, and was voted “Best Family Show” by Entertainer America.  Oakland children, ages 4 & up, will not want to miss this live interactive comedy show!  Registration is required, and begins Wednesday, June 28th.  The program will be held on the Library’s stage.

****OAKLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY PLAYERS RETURNS!!!

It’s time for a casting call!  The OPL PLAYERS, a drama club for children, ages 6 & up, returns this summer!  The title of the production is yet to be announced.  Children will meet downstairs in the Library’s Meeting Room from 6:00 to 7:30 pm on the following dates:  Mondays, July 24th and July 31st AND Thursdays, July 27th and August 3rd.  (Participants MUST be able to attend each of these sessions, please!)  The OPL Players will present their one and only performance on the Library’s stage on Monday, August 7th at 7:00 pm.  Registration is required to join the OPL PLAYERS, and begins Wednesday, June 28th.

2023 “All Together Now” Summer Reading Club (Children’s Dept.)

All are welcome! Join us for all-around fun in the Children’s Dept. of the Oakland Public
Library this summer! Our theme of kindness and friendship will be celebrated with
crafts (to go), in-person story times, music programs, and totally awesome special
events. Thanks to the New Friends of the Library, all programs are free of charge!

Pre-readers and Readers can begin logging books for the “All Together Now” Summer
Reading Club beginning Monday, June 26 th . Books will be tracked online with the
READsquared program. (The READsquared App will also be available.) Don’t miss the
Ice Cream Fun Day on Tuesday, June 27 th at 1:00 pm! The Good Humor Ice Cream
truck will be serving FREE treats at this Kick-Off Event. Registration and an ice cream
voucher is required, and sign-up begins Wednesday, June 14 th .

Without exception, Oakland children can continue reading and earning prizes until
Friday, August 11 th . The whole summer will wrap up when the Super Scientific Circus
presents the “Phenomenal Physics” show with Mr. Fish on Tuesday, August 15 th at
11:00 am. Amazing tricks involving boomerangs, bubbles, bull whips, balloons, eggs
and more will be featured.
