New Friends of the Oakland Public Library

The New Friends of the Oakland Public Library exists to promote knowledge and interest in the functions, resources, services and needs of the library. This vital civic association assists in developing programs and providing materials to extend and improve the library’s resources.

Our endeavors in recent months have raised several thousand dollars to benefit the community through the library’s outreach. In April of 2014, Oakland residents had the pleasure of viewing and purchasing artwork of local artists. The works displayed were watercolor, acrylic, pencil, photography and oil. The New Friends held a reception for the artists, whom it was a pleasure to meet and with whom we enjoyed conversing. In September 2014, we held an Art & Dinner fundraiser at The Brick House in Wyckoff. Those who attended went home with smiles, good food, and their own acrylic work of art! In November 2014 we sold thousands of books, CDs, DVDs and puzzles for children and adults during our weekend-long annual book sale. Of course, we have our ongoing sale of used books located near the library’s entrance. December found members singing along with one another in the spirit of the holiday season. The beginning of 2015 has even more in store, beginning with a few Games Nights! Look for our ever-popular Art Show and Sale again in April.

Among the library programs the New Friends have been able to fund this year are: the increasingly-popular summer reading and therapy dog programs for children, high-demand books available for weekly rental for adults, large-print books, and free or greatly reduced-cost passes to the American Museum of Natural History and the Intrepid Museum of Air and Space for families.

The New Friends has also helped to underwrite the library’s very popular concert series which has been graciously hosted for the past four years by The Presbyterian Church of New Jersey located on Ramapo Valley Road. Residents have been enjoying a variety of music. This year’s features include the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Schola Cantorum (a simply fabulous choral group), a trio performing chamber music, and a classical concert. We added a children’s concert this past November. Please see our schedule of events for a complete listing of upcoming performances.

We are constantly exploring new ways to help the Oakland Public Library fulfill its mission, and we welcome ideas and assistance from all who share our goals. In an effort to minimize meetings for busy people, The New Friends convene according to the dictates of ongoing projects rather than on fixed dates. We will post general meeting dates on the website; you may contact the library for details. Our annual general membership meetings are held in November. All are welcome to join us.

We believe that Oakland residents are the library's greatest resource, and we hope everyone will want to become a stakeholder in a community resource that offers so much for so many.
