New Friends of the Oakland Public Library
The New Friends of the Oakland Public Library exists to promote knowledge and interest in the functions, resources, services and needs of the library. This vital civic association assists in developing programs and providing materials to extend and improve the library’s resources.
Our endeavors in recent months have raised several thousand dollars to benefit the community through the library’s outreach. 2016 offered many popular programs and fundraisers. Five fabulous Sunday afternoon concerts ranging from classical to cabaret were provided free to the public; this series continues to become increasingly popular. Look for our upcoming 2017 concert dates on the events website! Last March we had our first Miniature Golf fundraising event running through the aisles of our library. What fun children and adults had! A taste of summertime activity indoors was a respite from the winter. Of course, we had our annual Art Show and our Annual Book Sale. Both were an amazing success. Profits from those events funded 100% of the library programs: Shakespeare in the Park; adult computer literacy; the summer reading programs for children, teens, and adults; the therapy dog program for children; high-demand books available for weekly rental for adults; large-print books; The Book Page newsletter; and free or greatly reduced-cost passes to the American Museum of Natural History and the Intrepid Museum of Air and Space for families. The list continues to grow!
The New Friends has also helped to underwrite the library’s very popular concert series which has been graciously hosted for the past five years by The Presbyterian Church of New Jersey located on Ramapo Valley Road. Residents have been enjoying a variety of music. This season’s features include the Tononi trio performing chamber music, and a classical concert. Please see our schedule of events for a complete listing of upcoming performances. Our spring concert will feature the American Brass.
We are constantly exploring new ways to help the Oakland Public Library fulfill its mission, and we welcome ideas and assistance from all who share our goals. In an effort to minimize meetings for busy people, The New Friends convene according to the dictates of ongoing projects rather than on fixed dates. We will post general meeting dates on the website; you may contact the library for details. Our annual general membership meetings are held in November. All are welcome to join us.
We believe that Oakland residents are the library's greatest resource, and we hope everyone will want to become a stakeholder in a community resource that offers so much for so many.
